Safety enhancement updates
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
I want to update you on our efforts to keep our community safe on and around the campus area.
We continue to monitor where crimes occur and deploy resources to enhance safety. We’re strengthening partnerships, using data analytics and exploring new technology, as we work to enhance safety for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
In the past few weeks, we have been increasing lighting and surveillance systems in the University District areas most trafficked by students — especially in and around Indianola and Chittenden avenues. This is in addition to the mobile lights and cameras already deployed throughout the off-campus area. Heading into this weekend, we’re adding even more.
I encourage you to look for these lighted pathways and use them while walking in the University District. If you’d rather have a discounted ride at night, use Lyft Ride Smart — which now extends to the Short North area. Again, there are no caps to the number of discounted rides that students can take.
This is making an impact, and our focus on safety will continue to be unwavering.
We’ve also recently updated the Ohio State app to make safety resources and features more prominent, campus-specific and easier to find. It’s now just below the Locations option on the app. The app is available on iOS and Android.
Don’t forget to pick up a portable personal safety device from the Office of Student Life. We have thousands to give away. These are a simple, free way to add another layer of protection to your routine by attaching them to backpacks or purses. Students can register for a pickup time online to get one at the Ohio Union. Students can also reserve door and window alarms and light timers.
The new online student safety class that launched last month is also a great resource. Filmed with local experts on and near High Street, the interactive course teaches students how to enhance their own safety through scenario-based exercises. Students can take this “Stay Safe, Buckeyes” class via BuckeyeLearn. It’s also helpful information for parents and interested community members, who can watch all 10 videos that make up the course.
Finally, Homecoming is a time to celebrate the Ohio State spirit and honor some of our most-loved traditions. I urge you to be smart as you celebrate all that is great about being a Buckeye.
Sincerely yours,
Kristina M. Johnson, PhD
