The following message was shared with all Ohio State students on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

Dear Buckeyes,

With the end of the semester upon us and finals underway, I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to all students for achieving yet another period of innovative learning, cutting-edge research and exemplary service. Veronica and I hope that each of you finds joy and peace in the coming holidays, and that you are able to create lasting memories with loved ones. We also hope that you’ll take time during the break to focus on your mental health and reflect on the many accomplishments we’ve made together in 2022 at Ohio State, and that you will take pride in that work.

All of Buckeye Nation looks forward to commencement on December 18 when we will bestow 3,564 degrees and certificates, and also hear from Coach Katie Smith. She is one of the greatest athletes Ohio State has ever educated — the first woman student-athlete who was so unique that we retired her number. A native of Ohio, she played for our women’s basketball team beginning as a freshman in 1992.

Academic recess

The university will be closed for an academic recess December 27-30 to further support the health, safety and well-being of faculty and staff. December 23, 26 and January 2 remain regular university holidays. Critical services will remain open, such as safety and security, meal preparation and dining services, the Wexner Medical Center, law enforcement and public safety, transportation, and other services determined as critical.

Please take time to prepare your residences, particularly those located off campus, before you leave to spend time with friends and family. Some key tips to remember: Pick up and install complimentary door and window alarms and light timers provided by Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement; close and lock all windows; and coordinate leaving with roommates to make sure the last housemate leaving locks up and takes in any mail or packages.

Buckeyes in action

Ohio State student-athletes will stay in action over the recess as the #4 ranked football team competes in the Peach Bowl against the #1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs in the first round of the 2022-23 College Football Playoff on December 31. The women’s basketball team will travel to Northwestern to play the Wildcats on December 28 before returning to Columbus to play Michigan on December 31, while the men’s basketball team will play Alabama A&M in Columbus on December 29. The women’s ice hockey team also travels to St. Charles, Missouri, to play Lindenwood University on December 30 and 31.

Several exhibitions will continue to be available to view for free over the holiday recess during regular gallery hours at the Wexner Center for the Arts, including Carlos Motta: Your Monsters, Our Idols and Sharing Circles: Carol Newhouse and the WomanShare Collective through December 30, and Ohio-based artist Suzanne Silver’s poetic video Vanishing Acts (2022) through December 31.

Celebrating success

As usual, Buckeyes have so much to celebrate this year, including multiple honors recently bestowed on students.

Congratulations to Mara Bahri, Mason Myers and Jasmine Tuazon, who were named 2022-23 Columbus-Athens Schweitzer Fellows. To be chosen for this outstanding program is a testament to their dedication to serving others and bettering the world around us. The Schweitzer Fellows Program supports and trains emerging health-focused graduate and professional students in creating and carrying out service projects to address unmet community needs.

Kudos to Adéwálé Adénlé, a PhD candidate in the Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy, who was recently awarded the 2022 Benneta Jules-Rosette Graduate Essay Award from the American Anthropological Association. Mr. Adénlé won this honor for his paper "Dialogue with the Spectacle and the Spirits: Re/Contextualizing Yorùbá Spiritual Objects in American Art Museums."

Congratulations to all 2022-2023 Presidential Fellowship recipients. It is the most prestigious award given by the Graduate School to recognize the outstanding scholarly accomplishments and potential of graduate students entering the final phase of their dissertation research or terminal degree project.

And, for the second year running, a team of Ohio State Master of Health Administration students took the top prize at the annual National Association of Health Services Executives Everett V. Fox Student Case Competition. Congrats to MHA students Ben Almassi, Sarah Gebretsadik and Sydney Stepney.

I wish everyone the best of luck on your remaining finals! As always, Go Buckeyes!

Sincerely yours,

Kristina M. Johnson, PhD
