Dear Buckeyes,

With the end of the semester and finals in sight, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many successes of Buckeyes this academic year.

The accomplishments on our campuses are an outstanding testament to all students who make this an incredible and unique institution. Our shared values, goals and aspirations enhanced student success, expanded our research and increased our excellence. There is so much potential in the people here to create and deploy the types of solutions that can transform lives and that the world needs now.

As I have always done with great pride, I would like to recognize the incredible work and talent of some of your fellow classmates.

Celebrating success

Congratulations to the second cohort of the President’s Buckeye Accelerator. They are members of the six startup ventures who won a pitch competition at the end of March, and each will receive $50,000, mentoring services and other support to advance their ideas. The initiative was launched to showcase the abundance of ingenuity and entrepreneurial talent of Ohio State students. The tools they are developing prove this point. They are helping to reduce infant mortality, empowering local artists, streamlining medical operating rooms and more.

Congratulations to Ohio State’s four 2023 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship recipients: undergraduate students Isaiah Boateng, Defne Ceyhan, Devi Dheekshita Nelakurti and Anya Phillips.

Kudos to undergraduate student Emily Johnson, who is working toward a BS in sociology with a minor in philosophy and a certificate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, who was named a 2023 Beinecke Scholar.

Congratulations to Caroline Mallory, a senior honors student majoring in international studies with a specialization in security and intelligence and minors in Chinese and geographic information science, who was selected for the Gaither Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C.

And, I wish Maria Berman, Connor Estrel, Nyah Gale and Ethan Moore a safe and enlightening time abroad as they deepen their language studies while part of the Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures Huntington International Fellowship program.

It was wonderful to see Buckeye Nation celebrating in Ohio Stadium on a beautiful day last week as the football team competed in the annual Spring Game.

Good luck to Buckeye football players in the upcoming NFL draft starting on Thursday.

And congratulations to our men’s tennis team for winning their 17th straight Big Ten title, and the men’s volleyball team, which won a share of the 2023 MIVA Regular-Season title as well as the 2023 MIVA Tournament title, and women’s basketball player Taylor Mikesell, who was drafted 13th overall in the WNBA draft.

It has been the highlight of my professional career to lead Ohio State and I wish you and all future Buckeyes continued success. Because of each of you, this institution is vibrant and had an incredible year of achievement.

Go Buckeyes!

Sincerely yours,

Kristina M. Johnson, PhD

Dear Colleagues,

With the end of the semester and finals in sight, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many successes of Buckeyes this academic year.

The accomplishments on our campuses are an outstanding testament to all faculty and staff members who make this an incredible and unique institution. Our shared values, goals and aspirations enhanced faculty and staff success, expanded our research and increased our excellence. There is so much potential in the people here to create and deploy the types of solutions that can transform lives and that the world needs now.

As I have always done with great pride, I would like to recognize the incredible work and talent of some of your fellow colleagues.

Celebrating success

I was honored to take part earlier this month in promoting professors Stanley Lemeshow in the College of Public Health; Stuart Cooper in the College of Engineering; and Elena Irwin in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences to Distinguished University Professors. The honorary title is one of our highest accolades, and these were extremely well-deserved!

They are renowned educators, scholars and leaders in their fields who truly epitomize Buckeye excellence. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Lemeshow, Dr. Cooper and Dr. Irwin.

Congratulations to the faculty members who were recognized recently for their outstanding work as educators — six received the Provost’s Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer, and 10 earned the 2023 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Please also join me in congratulating the three Buckeyes who are among the most recent class of Guggenheim Fellows: Professor Kathy Fagan from the Department of English; Professor Edward Foley from the Moritz College of Law; and Professor David Hoffman from the Department of History.

Kudos to Associate Professor of Dance Nyama McCarthy-Brown, who was named Ohio State’s first-ever Artist Laureate. Throughout the course of her one-year appointment in this role, she will engage with people all over the state to enhance our impact in the arts and better connect and enrich the lives of those we serve.

And congratulations to our six Distinguished Scholar Award winners, three Early Career Distinguished Scholars Award winners, and Ohio State’s 2023 Innovators of the Year.

It has been the highlight of my professional career to lead Ohio State and I wish you and all future Buckeyes continued success. Because of each of you, this institution is vibrant and had an incredible year of achievement.

As always, Go Buckeyes!

Sincerely yours,
