Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Two recent tragic incidents on our campus have resulted in the death of a student and in serious injury to a former student.

These incidents have been shocking to our community and truly heartbreaking for the families, friends and loved ones of the victims. I know you join me in offering support and condolences.

Tonight, I am announcing a task force led by Dr. Eileen Ryan, interim chair of our Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, and Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, senior vice president for Student Life, to further evaluate national best practices and provide recommendations to me within 60 days. In addition, last night I directed our campus public safety officials to launch an immediate review of our facilities to enhance safety measures.

As a reminder, if you or someone you know is at immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Additional resources are available here.

The safety and well-being of our university community is — and always will be — our first priority. Thank you for continuing to support your classmates and colleagues throughout our Buckeye family.

Sincerely,

Michael V. Drake, MD

President
