Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
I am pleased to share that the university has announced Harold L. Paz, MD, as the Executive Vice President and Chancellor for Health Affairs at Ohio State.
Dr. Paz brings 20 years of experience leading major medical programs at two large public universities — and most recently served as executive vice president and chief medical officer at Aetna, where he provided clinical leadership for domestic and global businesses. Since 2015, he has been a professor adjunct of internal medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. He remains clinically active, volunteering as a pulmonary physician at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Haven, Connecticut.
A recognized leader in both the public and private sectors, Dr. Paz shares our vision for a comprehensive, leading-edge model of health and wellness — one that will continue to drive the historic advancement and growth of our medical enterprise. In this new position, he will oversee the Wexner Medical Center — including all seven hospitals in the health system — our seven health-sciences colleges and more than 20 research institutes.
Previously, Dr. Paz served as CEO of the Penn State University Hershey Medical Center, senior vice president for health affairs, dean of the College of Medicine and president/CEO of the Hershey Health System. He led extraordinary growth that included the development of a regional health system, construction of eight new buildings and significant increases in operating budget and capital support. He also served as dean of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Group. During his tenure, NIH funding increased by more than 88 percent, and the endowment increased by over 600 percent.
At Aetna, Dr. Paz helped drive new and bold approaches to the most pressing health challenges in our community. One example: an innovative, data-driven approach to fighting opioid abuse that has been recognized nationally.
He will begin his role at Ohio State in the spring, pending board approval. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Paz to our Buckeye community.
Michael V. Drake, MD
