Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
Just in time for commencement, spring is finally — and thankfully — in full bloom. As always, it has been an exciting semester and academic year.
Students receiving their diplomas today will be part of the largest graduating class in our history! I look forward to celebrating your achievements with family and friends in the 'Shoe.
As a flagship in higher learning, we continue to advance teaching, learning and research across our campus and nationally.
The University Institute for Teaching and Learning is actively working to create and expand best practices in the classroom. In the fall, Ohio State was recognized for its "unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching," ranking No. 8 among public universities and No. 17 overall. Our graduate programs also continue to be recognized among the best in the nation.
Research and creative expression across the disciplines are uplifting lives throughout the community — from fighting the opioid crisis and healing through the arts to advancing food security.
Our students further embody our motto of "Education for Citizenship" through their commitment to others. BuckeyeThon, our largest student-run philanthropic organization, set a new record by raising more than $1.6 million for pediatric cancer research this year.
We have been working hard to help make an excellent Buckeye education more accessible and affordable. This year, I was pleased to share that we have committed $100 million in new student aid since 2015 — well ahead of our stated goal of reaching that number by 2020.
We continue to be recognized for the growth and excellence of our medical enterprise. Last week, Wexner Medical Center and University Hospital East each received the highest possible score of "A" for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group's Hospital Safety Grade.
Everything we do is focused on supporting the university's Time and Change strategic plan to become the best and most impactful public research university we can be. I am grateful for your talents and invaluable contributions.
Best wishes for a wonderful spring and summer.
