Spring Semester Update

The new year provides the opportunity to forge ahead with renewed energy. As we consider our past and plan for our future, I am pleased to report that the value of an Ohio State education — and our momentum as a university — have never been greater.

In the past year, we saw record highs in applications, graduation rates, academic excellence, diversity and donor support, and increases in NIH and NSF research funding.

For the first time, we were recognized by U.S. News & World Report for our "unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching." Eleven of our graduate and professional programs were ranked in the top 10 in the nation. And we were again named one of Reuters' most innovative universities in the world — with breakthroughs in tissue regeneration and fossil fuel technology to the intersection of dance and cancer rehabilitation.

At the same time, we unveiled Time and Change, Ohio State's strategic plan for the future, which represents our next steps toward becoming the very best university we can be by setting forth five pillars of broad focus.

We launched major initiatives in support of our teaching and learning, and access, affordability and excellence pillars. Ohio State's collaboration with Apple will further innovation in our classrooms and communities, while our commitment to cover any tuition gap for Pell Grant families in Ohio is unprecedented in our history.

The university also announced several new developments on the Columbus campus, including a vibrant arts district, interdisciplinary research building, an interdisciplinary health sciences center, and best-of-class hospital and ambulatory facilities. These projects advance our strategic plan — particularly our research and creative expression, and academic health care pillars — helping to support the life-changing work you do each day for our students and our communities in Ohio and beyond.

As always, it is an exciting time to be a Buckeye. I am proud of how far we have come and how far we will go. I wish you all a wonderful semester, and I look forward to another great year.
