President and Provost's Council on Sustainability
The President and Provost’s Council on Sustainability (PPCS) provides strategic advisement on the integration of sustainable practices, programs, and projects in all of the major constituencies of The Ohio State University. The Council formally meets periodically to guide campus planning and program development, working with a network of university committees, offices and departments. The PPCS members represent the leadership in academics, research, operations, medical center, athletics, student life and student government joined in a shared mission and collective dialogue. In 2008, President Gee signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, underscoring Ohio State's commitment to achieving greenhouse gas neutrality. Recognizing that the university must chart a more sustainable course without diminishing research progress, educational opportunities, or personal safety, the President and Provost's Council on Sustainability was formed to involve campus leaders in collaborative sustainability integration.
The PPCS has since actively overseen the development of plans to achieve sustainability goals including climate neutrality by 2050 and augment sustainability initiatives across the university. Critically important is the creation of a campus culture that embraces sustainability, communicates its benefits, and rewards innovation. We are confident that the Ohio State community—our most powerful and renewable resource—can meet this grand challenge of the 21st century in ways that benefit both our campus and the world.
The PPCS provides input and strategic counsel on campus sustainability projects. In 2011 and 2012, these projects included Tree Campus USA certification, a student government conference on sustainability, student and faculty projects at Waterman Farm, bring a fuel cell/electric hybrid bus into the CABS fleet, and sponsoring EcoSummit 2012. PPCS members look forward towards continued development of an Integrated Energy and Environment Implementation Strategy and discovering new opportunities for Ohio State’s advancement to eminence in sustainability.
The PPCS is dedicated to interacting with and aiding the broadest possible audience in the University Community in pursuit of advancing current programs, fomenting campus cultural change, and directing sustainable campus policy development.
